Our Staff

We never give up on you! Even when you feel like giving up on yourself, we know that your journey is a process of ups and downs that are meant to help you grow. With our clinical knowledge and many years of experience, we will be your strength until you find the confidence to stand on your own. And you will.once you allow yourself the opportunity to join us, and start your journey toward sober living.

No one makes it on their own - not even the Heritage team! In order to provide the best for you, we use a team-effort approach to sobriety and healing. This means that we work collectively to maximize the help we provide to every individual that comes to Heritage Home.

The quality of our team is our greatest strength, and your best reason for choosing Heritage Home. To ensure the best treatment possible, we've hand picked a group of professional and qualified health care providers so that you are in the care of compassionate, empathetic, and supportive individuals. Past clients have repeatedly mentioned how this single feature helped them overcome their addiction.

Our experience in other drug treatment programs has shown us what works - and what doesn't work. We've developed a holistic and flexible approach that allows us to match the treatment to the individual.

We are not a big institution. We are a team of caring and dedicated people who want to help.

Here is a brief introduction to the Heritage Home team:

CATHERINE TOMAN , M.A. Counseling Psychology, Graduate Certificate in Addiction Research, Certificate in Hypnotherapy & EMDR trained.

A Psychotherapist, specializing in addictions since 1992. Catherine was Clinical Director for 7 years for residential substance-abuse facilities treating federal inmates prior to release into the community. While there she also led specialized groups dealing with issues particular to female substance abuse. She was also responsible for weekly groups counseling family members of the residents in treatment. Catherine believes in treating the whole person and thus teaches meditation to the residents as a means of finding self-awareness and to provide addicts with relaxation and stress reduction techniques rather than self-medicating with drugs.

PORTIA DAHL , M.A. in Creative Arts Therapies

Portia joined the clinical team as a Drama Therapist to help add a very successful therapeutic addendum to the treatment repertoire. Through drama therapy residents may achieve an emotional understanding and an opportunity to work through traumatic events that may not be reached though conventional therapy sessions. Portia's work experience includes Mediation Coordinator at the Community Justice Society where she coordinated restorative justice mediation sessions. Her varied experience with the justice system and her mediation skills are complementary to her role as drama therapist.

LUIS RINO , B.A. Applied Human Sciences with a concentration in Human Relations

Before becoming an addictions counselor, Luis was a missionary for the Oblates in Alberta . During this time, he had the opportunity to work with First Nations communities. He worked with individuals dealing with the effects of generational trauma, drugs and alcohol abuse. Luis not only counsels our clients but also organizes and runs workshops that our clients have always found to be informative and fun. Luis previously created a communications skills training program for men and women in halfway houses to teach them more appropriate and effective ways of communication. This has been a skill that has benefited not only the addict but the family as a whole once the addict returns home or to the workplace.

BOB JONES , B.A. Applied Human Sciences

In 1995 Bob began working with the native community as a facilitator for trauma intervention and anger management groups. Through his work he became interested and learned about native culture and native healing in particular. At Heritage Home he introduces the philosophy of native healing and spirituality and has brought a native elder into our team to hold healing circles and built a sweat lodge to give residents an opportunity to look at healing from a different perspective. This reflects Heritage Home's philosophy of expanding one's view and keeping an open mind using every tool available for the healing process.
